That is not changing in the foreseeable future. When you pay with debit/credit card, you will pay the exact amount to the penny and no pennies are physically exchanged. I have paid cash in 4 stores in the last 2 days. Lastly, I'm guessing that since you no longer use the penny, I won't be able to get rid of the US pennies that I have (not that they are worth a lot, guess I can try to sell them or dump in an airport charity box). Anyway, what I wanted to ask was, now that the CAD is worth more than the USD, am I more likely to get shouted at (as an obvious foreigner) if I try to use the US coins?Īnd if I receive US coins as change, how are people likely to react if I hand them back and ask for Canadian coins instead?ĭoes acceptance of US coins decrease in more rural areas away from the border (not that I'm likely to visit Nunavut, but perhaps in northern AB or SK)? I don't recall receiving any US coins on my previous trip but I can't think of where else they would have come from. I've never visited the US except when I was around 8 years old, and don't intend to (but that's a discussion for elsewhere).Ī online search shows that US coins are generally accepted at par in Canada. I have about $50 worth of coins left from my trip in 2005, and upon checking about 20% of them are actually US coins. I'm planning to visit Ontario in the next few months. The last time I visited Canada was 8 years ago.
